Abstract

The wind farm on Vinalhaven known as Fox Islands Wind project has drawn both criticism and praise. National newspapers have attacked the project saying that it is detrimental to rural communities because of turbine noise issues and negative impacts on property values, but residents on Vinalhaven and North Haven have been largely supportive of the project because they have seen savings on their electric bills. The project has also sparked interest in energy issues such as weatherization and has led to the "Energy for ME" initiative which enables students to see the effects of their electricity usage in real time. The noise complaints were studied by engineers at GE who launched several measures designed to minimize the sound levels from the turbines. The net effects of these islanders' attempts at energy independence will not be seen for several years.
