In 1988 the Island Institute created the Maine Island Trail, a small boat waterway. Today the Maine Island Trail Association provides information and island stewardship to confront such issues as overuse of low-impact and no-camping island sites; use of privately owned islands; kayak portages in Acadia National Park; and the Adopt-an-Island program.
