Abstract

With only five percent of its land devoted to public conservation, Maine ranks 47th out of the 50 states in land preservation. Private preservation organizations like the Nature Conservancy and the Maine Coast Heritage Trust have begun to fill the gap, but in the islands and the North Woods economic pressures and corporate takeovers place conservation of large tracts and their "highest and best use" lands in jeopardy.
