Abstract

In the 1970s and 1980s, clammers set up squatters' camps on privately owned islands off North Haven, becoming increasingly lawless, breaking into cabins, and jacking game. The failure of law enforcement and vigilante fishermen to control them led to the clamming wars, and occassionally gunfire, until a 1985 settlement brokered between the owners and squatters.
