Abstract

Two lengthy, detailed articles about the current Maine economy. Gov. King sees state industrial change creating a new economic base, and he is optimistic, as is the annual status report of the Maine Economic Growth Council, "Measures of Growth." Other trends in the state, like crime, cigarette smoking, and infant mortality, parallel the economy. Indigenous small businesses account for the majority of the employment growth.
