Abstract

Maine has six programs affiliated with the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association. The Hearts and Horses Therapeutic Riding Center in Scarborough provides horseback riding therapy to autistic children, elderly stroke victims, and spinal injury cases. Riding improives balance, strength, and proprioception. Hearts and Horses employs occupational and physical therapists and about 150 volunteers.
