Abstract

For more than a year, Dale Cole says, his fellow dairy farmers have received far less for their milk than it costs to produce. The Maine Milk Commission is considering an increase from the current $1.09 per gallon, and UMaine has calculated that a gallon costs farmers $1.45 to produce. The culprits are fuel costs, repair costs, and property taxes, all higher in Maine than elsewhere. Details. A related story describes other culprits: declining federal subsidies and the demise of the Northeast Dairy Council.
