Abstract

Though unemployment is relatively low -- 4.7% in Maine, 6% nationally -- the labor market is stagnant. There is little turnover in existing jobs, and few new ones are being created. Underemployment is also a problem. The pain is spread very broadly; experts say no one is safe. Compared to a decade ago, the unemployed are twice as likely to remain unemployed for 6 months. Details; table of unemployment, 2002 and 2001, by market area.
