Abstract

"Focus on Technology" piece on Hydro-Photon, a Blue Hill company that produces the Steri-Pen, a portable device that cleans water with ultraviolet light. The device is gradually finding an audience among backpackers and travelers, and has caught the attention of the U.S. military. Miles Maiden, founder and chief executive officer of the company, joined forces last year with Rich Gurin, the retired chief executive of Pennsylvania-based Binney & Smith, to establish the product. The high cost of manufacturing the device in Maine has led the firm to less costly offshore manufacturing, with the first Chinese-made units scheduled to arrive in Blue Hill later this spring. The Steri-Pen currently retails at $200.
