Abstract

Because of spotty cell phone coverage in Maine, Fred "Cell Phone" Forsley of Shipyard Brewing Co. in Portland, owns three cell phones from three carriers, Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint. Particularly spotty is coverage along the road formerly known as I-495, and Sam Zaitlin, chairman of the Maine Turnpike Authority (MTA), is trying to improve that. Recently the Legislature passed a bill that allows cell phone carriers to use MTA communications towers along the highway. With maps of cell phone markets in Maine, statistics on cell phone use, details on how tower locations are chosen, and information on satellite phones, which are the most reliable.
