Abstract

"Next" piece on 12 Mainers shaping the future of the state's economy, with a profile of Mohammed Abdi, 43, who works as a liaison between the Lewiston School Department and families of the roughly 250 East African students, most of them recently arrived from Somalia. He says that the families must interact as much as possible with the rest of the community and not become isolated. Community elders will not allow a student to drop out of school, and Abdi tries to show the students the educational opportunities that they can find in Maine and elsewhere.
