Abstract

About half a dozen Maine companies franchise their businesses, including Amato's sandwich shops (called Tomato's in franchises) and Aging Excellence, both based in Portland. Franchising law specialist Tim Bryant, an attorney with Preti Flaherty in Portland, says some franchising consultants urge businesses to expand as fast and far as they can. Kaile Warren, CEO of South Portland-based Rent-A-Husband, followed a disastrous rapid expansion strategy urged by his investors. Now he has re-started with a slow-growth franchising plan. Starting a franchise can take years of planning and a significant upfront investment. Amato's spent several years expanding through company-owned stores and tweaked their procedures and menu before franchising. With details on the franchising process and on several other Maine franchises, including Criterium Engineers and Mister Bagel, based in Portland and South Portland.
