Abstract

Profile of and interview with Jack Cashman, 53, Gov. John Baldacci's new commissioner of the Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD). Cashman plans to break DECD into four departments: community development, business assistance and attraction, tourism, and a new department called "innovation." He describes how he worked to reopen Great Northern Paper and rescue Georgia-Pacific paper company, worked with Energy East to bring 110 accounting section employees from New York to join 70 employees in Maine, and is working with Guilford Transportation to bring in a rail-tie-making operation. He discusses his own business background, keeping young people in Maine, attracting venture capital, funding for education, and why casinos are not good for Maine.
