Abstract

"Business Maine: Northern" piece reporting that J. D. Irving Ltd.'s pending sale of more than 70,000 acres of woods has locals worried that the effort's of RESTORE: The North Woods, the organization promoting the creation of a Maine Woods National Park, will move-one step closer. Rumors are circulating that the northerly portion of the land is being purchased by Roxanne Quimby, founder of Burt's Bees and advocate of the creation of the national park, and the southerly portion by well-known Maine woodland owner Herb Haynes of Winn and William Gardner of Millinocket. The parcel spans several northern Penobscot County townships and abuts the eastern border of Baxter State Park. The land was originally purchased by Irving for about $200 per acre four years ago.
