Abstract

"Building & real estate" special section piece on Portland-based Blue Tarp, a firm that offers a purchase card program to contractors and vendors in the building materials industry. The service effectively eliminates suppliers' role as lender and frees up time spent maintaining credit accounts for professional tradespeople. Despite these efficiencies, the industry is resistant to change and might be slow to adopt a new practice. Brian Rigney, 37, is Blue Tarp's CEO, president, and founder. Blue Tarp, incorporated in 1998, provides a singular service and is trying out pilot markets in southern Maine, South Carolina, North Carolina, and New Jersey. The number of card holders has risen 500 percent during the past 18 months, and Rigney hopes to turn a profit within a year's time.
