Abstract

"Focus on Retail" piece on the erosion of the retail economy in Freeport and how the town is working to reinvent itself from a day-trip stop to an overnight destination. Outdoor adventure and cultural tourism would be highlighted, along with shopping. Aspects of the Vision 2010 plan, published by the Freeport Economic Development Corporation, include changes to Route 1, reintegrating local housing into the village, introducing local bus routes and Amtrak service, more hotel and convention space, and village landscaping. Independent merchants, driven to the fringes of town by the outlet boom, are now seen as a vital element in the plan. With details on new development in town, including a Hilton Garden Inn and conference center that is under construction on Route 1.
