Abstract

"From the Ground Up" piece. Percentage-wise, Maine has the worst record nationally for recent manufacturing job losses. Since July 2000, there has been a 22 percent decline, a loss of 18,000 jobs. Construction jobs, on the other hand, are increasing. The University of Maine's Construction Management Technology program is trying to retain educated youth, and its advisory committee reads like a Who's Who of Maine's construction industry leaders, all of whom encourage students to spend summers working for local contractors.
