Abstract

"Next List" piece featuring ten people who are shaping the future of Maine's economy, with a profile of Juan Gonzalez, owner of La Bodega Latina in Portland. Since the opening the ethnic grocery eight years ago, the store has become a de facto community center, neighborhood hangout, and recently, a civil rights watchdog center. Gonzalez, 36, feels a responsibility to speak out on issues that affect Portland's immigrant community. In January, Gonzalez organized a protest march after federal immigration officials swept through Portland agencies and businesses that cater to immigrants.
