Abstract

"Next List" piece featuring ten people who are shaping the future of Maine's economy, with a profile of Joseph Verdi, principal investigator at the Center for Regenerative Medicine at the Maine Medical Center Research Institute (MMCRI) in Scarborough. Verdi, a 43-year-old career stem-cell biologist, established the Center for Regenerative Medicine in 2003 through a grant from the National Institutes of Health. MMC in 2002 was ranked as one of the top 16 major teaching hospitals in the country. MMCRI's culture is more collaborative than competitive, partly due to its relatively low profile, but it is quickly becoming known as a world-class facility. Verdi says his work makes health care more efficient.
