Abstract

"Focus on Professional Services" piece on Maine's system for disciplining lawyers, which draws criticism for its relative lack of action. Of 172 complaints reviewed by the Board of Overseers of the Maine Bar Association in 2003, nearly 90 percent resulted in dismissals or dismissals with warnings. Maine's lawyer discipline system ranks as the ninth best in the nation, according to HALT, a Va.-based legal reform group, but Maine is among the least likely states to discipline a lawyer. Large firms have an edge in avoiding missed filing deadlines or conflicts of interest, which make up more than half of all grievance complaints. With details on Maine's disciplinary process.
