Abstract

The town of Atkinson and 39 other Maine communities already have clear-cutting bans as or more restrictive than the one proposed on this fall's referendum. Atkinson tree farmer Mel Ames sees clear-cutting as a conflict between local farmers and out-of-state real estate investors, who sell treeless tracts to developers. Different statewide studies project vastly differing effects of the referendum, and Governor Angus King's proposed Forest Compact, on employment. Details; graph showing increasing timber harvest and decreasing forest products employment, 1977-1992.
