Abstract

"Business Unusual" piece on luthier Joel Eckhaus, 53, who sells about 30 handcrafted stringed instruments a year from his South Portland-based Earnest Uncommon Musical Instruments. The instruments he makes--ukuleles, mandolins, and tenor guitars--are lesser-known, but are experiencing an upsurge in popularity, particularly the ukulele.
