Abstract

"Newsworthy" piece with a profile of James Bau Graves, artistic director of the Center for Cultural Exchange in Portland and author of "Cultural Democracy: The Arts, Community and the Public Purpose." Graves argues that the United States must increase and diversify its arts spending, noting that arts spending for the city of Berlin, Germany, eclipses the entire budget of the National Endowment for the Arts. Graves has addressed the needs of the fringe players in the American arts world over the Center for Cultural Exchange's 10-year history.
