Abstract

Senate president Beth Edmonds is proposing that a $25 million bond be devoted to the infrastructure needs of libraries, theaters, museums, and other arts and cultural organizations. She has tapped into an ongoing discussion on the role of the so-called creative economy in statewide economic development. A survey by the Cultural Affairs Council of Maine found that the state's cultural facilities are in need of more than $340 million in capital investments. Maine is perceived in tourism surveys as ranking fairly low on cultural amenities. Bangor has experienced a strong revitalization thanks to its investment in cultural institutions.
