Abstract

"Minding Your Business." John Cole argues that Jonathan Carter's referendum to ban clear-cutting is in the tradition of Maine environmental progress, and is the only way to restore local control of the north woods.. He argues that out-of-state paper companies exploit 90 percent of Maine's land and threaten job losses every time they are threatened with regulation. He also credits Carter with forcing Governor Angus King to offer a compromise plan.
