Abstract

"Perspectives" piece by Bill Becker, director of the Maine Heritage Policy Center in Portland, on the center's recent report, "Priority Maine: Crafting a Budget Maine People Can Afford." The report notes, among other things, that spending in Maine since 1995 grew by 69 percent, while inflation was just under 25 percent; taxes and fees are increasing; unsustainable Medicaid spending has not been addressed; and costs of educational functions not related to the school classroom need to be reduced.
