Abstract

"From the Ground Up" piece on how global demand for construction materials, particularly in China, is driving up prices for Maine projects. Demands generated by rebuilding after the recent tsunami and in Iraq, the effect of the weak U.S. dollar, and high energy prices are also contributing to higher prices. Portland's Ocean Gateway project, proposed six years ago, received a low bid from Cianbro Corp. that was 37 percent higher than the original $12 estimate.
