Abstract

"Focus on Building & Real Estate" piece on Gardiner-based Maine Drilling & Blasting, which has bought six regional competitors in the past eight years, making it the largest such company in New England. Founded by Ted Purington Sr. in 1966, it is now operated by President Bill Purington and his three brothers, all executives in the firm. The cost of complying with stricter explosives regulations put into place after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks has disproportionately affected smaller companies, and mergers have increased. Each MD&B division operates as a local company and shares the same operating model. With details on the blasting process and the costs of complying with new regulations.
