Abstract

The unusually wet May has put vegetable farmers like Rick Belanger of Lewiston behind schedule. This is especially so in southern Maine, which saw more rainfall than other regions. Some farmers might not plant at all, and others might pursue potential federal disaster-relief funding. Jack Flaherty of Flaherty's Family Farm Inc. in Scarborough has diversified his crops, relied more on greenhouses, and focused on retail to mitigate the vagaries of farming. With details on several other farms and how they are coping.
