Abstract

Article on the Maine Community College System (MCCS), which has increased enrollment 58 percent in the past three years. The enrollment gains have led to an 8.8 percent tuition increase and forced cuts in staff and programs to close a $3.2 million budget shortfall next year. John Fitzsimmons, president of MCCS, explained that state subsidies have not kept pace with rising costs brought on by increased enrollment.
