Abstract

"Focus: Transportation & Trade" piece on Palermo-based ET Transportation Services, a freight broker that connects customers with available trucks to haul cargo, and ensures that carriers' trucks are loaded in both directions. Founded in 1988, the company now faces challenges of demand that is out of pace with the supply of trucks, increased competition and federal legislation on fuel surcharges that could put the company in a financial bind. Tom Pilsbury, president of the firm, says the fundamental problem is a shortage of trucks. Dale Hanington of the Maine Motor Transport Association says small trucking companies are struggling with high fuel prices.
