Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece on a review of Maine's economic performance so far in 2005. Charles Colgan, a professor of public policy at the University of Southern Maine, said job growth will be devastated if all the base closings occur and Bath Iron Works suffers further layoffs. A potential recession in the next decade would exacerbate the issue. On a positive note, Mike Allen, an economist with Maine Revenue Services, noted that corporate and individual income tax revenue is up over last year. Allen added that electronic filing of state income tax returns include greater detail of capital gains and dividends income, which is leading to higher revenues.
