Abstract

Bookland of Maine, a former client of Portland-based Baker Newman & Noyes, won a $6.6 million jury verdict against the accounting firm in April, an amount Baker Newman is appealing. Bookland's lawyers argued that the chain's bankruptcy was a result of the firm's negligence in not alerting Bookland to financial problems the firm discovered in a review. The jury might have been influenced by the post-Enron, corporate accounting scandal climate in reaching its verdict.
