Abstract

"Focus on Human Resources" piece on how three Maine business owners: salon owner Debbie Elliott of Portland; Bret Watson of Gorham-based stove manufacturer Jotul of North America; and Rich Hussey of North Berwick-based Hussey Seating Company, are working to retain employees. Elliott eliminated competitive commissions in favor of benefits and advancement opportunities; Watson put in place an employee development program that includes cross-training; and Hussey has formalized a retention strategy that includes leadership training and above-average benefits and perks.
