"Focus on Greater Portland Region" piece on Portland-based NBC affiliate WCSH-TV
"Focus on Greater Portland Region" piece on Portland-based NBC affiliate WCSH-TV, which has topped Portland's news market for 20 years. During November, its six o'clock newscast drew more than twice the viewers of its nearest competitor, Portland-based CBS affiliate WGME. Its news team is a staff of seasoned veterans. Even with strong ratings and an array of local programs to sell, pricing ads is a tightrope act for the station in a competitive Portland market. Virginia-based Gannett Co. has pumped more than $15 million into the station since purchasing it in 1998 from Maine Broadcasting System. Steve Thaxton, WCSH's president and general manager, sees his job as keeping the station on top by avoiding complacency.
