Abstract

"Focus: Technology" piece featuring an interview in question-and-answer format with Philip Bogden, CEO of the Gulf of Maine Ocean Observing System (GoMOOS). GoMOOS operates 10 buoys in the Gulf of Maine that monitor surface and subsurface ocean conditions. GoMOOS was founded in 2000 as a working prototype of a larger national ocean monitoring system. GoMOOS this year saw its federal funding fall to just $500,000 from nearly $2 million in 2005. Bogden discusses the budget cut, and why collaboration is the key to building a national oceanographic monitoring system.
