Abstract

"Business Maine: Statewide" piece reporting that a recently released report says 75 percent of major industrial and municipal facilities in Maine discharged more pollution into waterways than allowed by the Clean Water Act. The Environment Maine Research & Policy Center, based in Portland, found that 87 facilities in Maine exceeded their permits more than 460 times during July 2003 and December 2004. Environment Maine claimed the report proves state lawmakers need to prioritize grant and loan funding for wastewater improvements. The Maine Department of Environmental Protection agrees, adding that the state needs $279 million for plant improvements over the next five years to meet existing water quality standards.
