Abstract

Article on Maine's rural telecom market, with a focus on Mid-Maine Communications. Mid-Maine provides 26 rural communities with phone service, as well as providing statewide phone, data and Internet services. In April, Mid-Maine agreed to be purchased by Alabama-based Otelco Inc. Nick Winchester, CEO of Mid-Maine, said the $37.8 million deal will give his company a chance to become a regional provider of services. Several of the 22 independent telephone companies operating in the state are growing to offer more services or expand their service footprint. With comments on Lewiston-based Oxford Networks, Unity-based UniTel Inc., and Lincolnville Telephone Co.
