Abstract

"Focus on Transportation & Trade" piece on trucking-intensive industries that bemoan Maine's seasonal weight restrictions on rural roads. Roads are posted to protect them during frequent thaws that effectively tenderize them. In Maine, few roads are engineered to the modern standards that would protect them during thaws. In a typical spring, the state posts up to 1,900 miles of roadway, and cities and towns post thousands of miles more, creating a lack of consistency among towns. Some towns are becoming overprotective of roads to the detriment of commerce. In rural Maine, one closed route can create long detours. State law exempts trucks involved in agriculture and fuel delivery and school buses and emergency vehicles from the restrictions.
