Abstract

"Focus: Midcoast Region" piece on citizens' initiatives to limit big-box development, with a focus on activists Jenny Mayher and Eleanor Kinney of Bremen. Three southern midcoast towns voted to restrict or outlaw big-box stores on a single town meeting day in March, due largely to the efforts of Kinney and Mayher's organization, Our Town. Our Town Damariscotta spurred the development of the Damariscotta Regional Business Alliance, and led voters to approve a 35,000-square-foot cap on store size in the town. Our Town now has six affiliates in the midcoast region. With comments by Jane Bechtel Lafleur, executive director of Friends of Midcoast Maine; and Mary Kate Reny, part of the Reny family that operates discount stores across the state.
