Abstract

"Focus: Building & Real Estate" piece on the Maine Housing & Building Materials Exchange (BME) in Sanford, which serves low-income Mainers by offering a range of discounted building materials, from roof shingles to toilets, gas ranges to bathroom tile. Dave Zimmerman, executive director of the non-profit BME, says publicizing what the organization does is one of his biggest challenges. Zimmerman says the organization is 98 percent self-supporting, which is unheard of in the nonprofit world. With comments by Anne Gass, a consultant in Gray who founded the BME in 1989; Brenda Paluso, director of public policy for the Maine Association of Nonprofits; and Sondra Shields, a Kennebunk resident who has used the BME for eight years. With a related article on how the BME keeps its shelves stocked - primarily through surplus donations and salvage.
