Abstract

Article on Maine businesses that are trying to gain younger customers, a difficult task in a state that has the nation's oldest population. Rex Rhoades, executive editor of the Lewiston Sun Journal, launched a special "b" section this summer aimed at attracting younger readers. At the Bangor Symphony Orchestra, efforts by Johnna Lacey were successful in luring a young professional crowd. But at the Portland Symphony Orchestra, Alice Kornhauser, director of marketing and public relations, has decided efforts to attract those under 40 simply don't merit the expense. David Greenham, director of the Theater at Monmouth, says a diverse mix of productions has helped attract a younger, hipper crowd.
