"The Food Issue" piece on Maine's specialty food producers, who employed 5,428 people in 2003. This year, the Augusta-based Small Enterprise Growth Fund and Portland-based CEI Community Ventures organized the Maine Food for Thought Forum at Bowdoin College to support investment in geographic clusters of specialty food businesses. A recent Brookings Institute study recommended that the state create a cluster development fund for traditional and emerging industries. Time pressures on small business owners can make collaboration and organization difficult.
