Abstract

"Focus on Safety & Security" piece on how Maine could spend federal maritime security grants to protect its ports. A port security bill co-authored by Maine senator Susan Collins calls for $400 million in grants to finance port security upgrades. If approved, the appropriation would double the amount spent last year in port grants and could be used to fix vulnerabilities, conduct training, and establish new communications mechanisms. All ports will be allowed to compete for grants. Various transportation experts in Maine offer specifics on they would like to allocate such funds.
