Abstract

"Focus: Banking & Finance" piece on community banks, with a focus on technology strategies and the need for an online presence to stay competitive. Terrance L. Beers, executive vice president and COO for Kennebunk-based Rivergreen Bank, said his bank has used the Web as a branding tool but has intentionally avoided becoming a virtual bank. Rivergreen prefers a face-to-face experience with its customers. Other community bank customers have access to a wide range of online offerings. Wayne Sherman, president of Biddeford Savings Bank, will soon launch a product that allows customers to apply for mortgages online, one of the many technology upgrades the bank has made to stay competitive. With comments by Peter Greene, senior vice president and chief administrative officer for Union Trust; and Jon Henderson, director of sales at Mid-Maine Communications.
