Abstract

"Business Maine: Central & Western" piece reporting that three investment groups are looking at the former Maine Yankee nuclear power plant in Wiscasset as a power plant site to burn gas extracted from coal. Burning gas from coal is cleaner and more efficient than burning coal directly, and the process is cheaper than burning natural gas. Steve Hinchman of the Conservation Law Foundation said a plant would still produce greenhouse gases, so the state isn't likely to approve one. Kurt Adams at the Maine Public Utilities Commission said the state has a surplus of energy and wouldn't benefit from new plants.
