Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece on the latest State Economic Momentum index, which claims that while Maine lags most of the country, it has the best economic momentum of the six New England states. Issued quarterly by State Policy Reports in Washington, D.C., the index measures growth in personal income, population and employment. Charles Colgan, an economics professor at the University of Southern Maine, said the index ranked Maine 37th in the nation, noting that population growth has always been problematic for the state. Michael Donihue, economics professor at Colby College, said the index may not be an accurate measure of all of Maine's economic momentum, pointing to underrepresented items like retail sales growth and Mainers who commute to Massachusetts to work.
