Abstract

Profile of Henry (Hank) L. P. Schmelzer, 63, of Somesville, president and CEO of the Maine Community Foundation in Ellsworth, an influential nonprofit that supports some 3,000 grants and initiatives annually and has assets of more than $200 million. Schmelzer, who is named 2007 Business Leader of the Year by Mainebiz, is a former lawyer and investment manager who has doubled the number of MaineCF's donors, making it the second largest foundation in the state after the private Libra Foundation. Its three- and five-year investment results are in the top 5 percent of some 100 community foundations nationwide. With a look at Schmelzer's friendship with Libra Foundation president, Owen Wells. They met at the University of Maine at Orono, attended law school at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., served together in Vietnam, and remain close friends.
