Abstract

"From the Ground Up" piece on Maine's independent contractor laws and their shortcomings. Portland-based Maine Employers' Mutual Insurance Company (MEMIC) is taking the lead on reforming the laws, citing worker safety and Maine's unnecessarily high workers' compensation rates. MEMIC hopes to create a process in which everyone knows in advance who is an employee - and thereby covered by a company's workers' comp insurance - and who is an independent contractor responsible for his own safety and insurance coverage. With comments from the Maine Department of Labor, and Allan Muir, an attorney specializing in workers' compensation law.
