Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece on Maine's lack of transportation funding, which some say is reaching crisis mode. A Department of Transportation (DOT) study identified 288 bridges in the state that are in poor condition and could face limits on use or be closed to all traffic within a decade. Sen. Christine Savage (R-Union) said the indexing of the gas tax to the consumer price index was thought to be a funding solution, until energy prices skyrocketed. With comments by Sen. Dennis Damon (D-Trenton), co-chairman of the Legislature's Committee of Transportation; and Bruce Van Note, deputy commissioner of the DOT.
